JumpRope makes an easy-to-use, web-based learning management system geared for the K-12 market. Our core product is a standards-based gradebook integrated with attendance and behavior tracking, curriculum design tool, and administrative dashboard. It provides teachers, students, parents, administrators, networks and districts with access to real-time data so they can collaborate on student learning.
JumpRope was created from a teacher’s perspective to be a singular resource with all the tools necessary to maximize the impact of standards-based grading. We remove the headache of trying to fit innovative grading and assessment practices into existing systems by having seamless integrations with the school’s SIS (PowersSchool, Infinite Campus, etc).
Additionally, we offer professional development to schools that are new to standards-based grading and wish to have additional training in connection with the launch of JumpRope.
JumpRope is quite different than traditional assignment based gradebooks. Traditional grades fail to tell teachers, students and parents what students have actually learned. Our curriculum design tool walks teachers though the backwards design process, encouraging teachers to be very explicit about identifying what a student needs to learn in their course (these can be teacher written standards, state standards or Common Core). Teachers then align their assessments to their classroom goals; this encourages teachers to really think about how their assessments are aligned to the learning goals for the course. Planning data then automatically populates the gradebook where teachers assess the student’s performance on the standards based on their demonstration of mastery.
There are a number of terms that are commonly used to describe a standards-based system of assessment: standards-based grading, standards-based assessment & learning, mastery-based grading, and standards-based assessment & reporting among others.
At JumpRope, we call it standards-based grading.
Standards-based grading is an assessment philosophy that shifts student feedback from the work that the student has done to what the student knows. All assessments are aligned to standards and students are given feedback on how well they have mastered those standards.
It is a subtle shift with dramatic results.
Students who learn quickly can demonstrate mastery and then be presented with new challenges to further increase their knowledge. Students who struggle are not trapped by past failure so they can stay focused on increasing learning and showing their best work.
Another benefit is the separation of academic mastery from habits of work mastery. More traditional grading might give the same grade to a student who demonstrates mastery but turns in an assignment late as a student who turns in an assignment on time but has not demonstrated mastery. In a standards-based system, the grades look very different.
Effective standards-based grading empowers teachers and parents with the accurate data they need to pinpoint specific areas for improvement. This fine-tuned process propels students to become lifelong learners, inspired by what they know instead of what they do.
